International Award for Scarborough Urban Renaissance

Scarborough Renaissance wins top international award
for public participation

Scarborough is celebrating once again after winning the Project of the Year category in the International Association for Public Participation’s (IAP2) Core Values Awards 2009. Scarborough’s entry based on ‘Scarborough’s Future – Delivering an Urban Renaissance’, beat off stiff competition in its category from 12 other projects from across the globe to take home the prestigious accolade.

What’s Really Going on at Community Planning Events?

The British magazine NEW START reported on JTP’s tenth anniversary in 2005 and concluded: “Many problems affecting communities do not relate to urban design and instead require a more extensive solution. Often, the answers are actually quite simple and lie within the communities themselves.

The advantages of consensus-oriented community planning events over traditional design competitions lies in the integration of any interest groups and their needs: “In my experience, high-profile design competitions often fail because do not take into account the other basic elements which are necessary in creating sustainable and attractive estates.”

Action Planning Awarded with Innovation Prize

The Innovation Prize is awarded annually by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper and the trade journal Immobilien Manager. In 1999, the process of community planning won first prize in the category “property planning”.

Robert-Jungk-Preis 1999: Essen’s “Berliner Platz“– A Model for the Future

For decades, Berliner Platz, a huge expanse in the North of Essen’s inner city, had been a wasteland, with several zoning plans resulting in severe conflicts. Against this background, a Community Planning Weekend was instrumental in finding a solution for the successful development of the site based upon a broad consent of politicians and the population. This led to investment activities of more than 600 million Euros.

Laypeople, Go Get Your Rulers!

In December 2000, German magazine Der Spiegel ran a detailed report about the Arnsberg community planning event: “It has been working, fort he eighth time in Germany, and the first time in a remote small town.”

Community Planning Part of North Rhine-Westphalia’s Coalition Agreement.

As of 1999, the red-green party coalition in North Rhine-Westphalia has been promoting Community Planning as a prime example of civic participation, including it in their agenda for the future as “Stadt der Bürgerinnen und Bürger” [City of Citizens].
