A new concept for the `Central Parade´, New Addington (GB) 2009

Community planning weekend to create a new vision for New Addingtons `Central Parade´ in the heart of the community.

In 2008 an overdimensioned concept for the `Central Parade´ with TESCO supermarket as the main investor failed by court order in consequence of the endeavour of citizens groups. Croydon City Council decided to remain commited in the regeneration of the area implicating a new supermarket, a market place, more parking areas, and maintaining respectively enhancing community facilities and green spaces.
With the objective to regenerate the `Central Parade´ in a way that meets the priorities of the local people Croydon City Council assigned the team of John Thompson & Partners. By intensive public participation, workshops and a Community Planning Weekend in October 2009 a regeneration framework for Central Parade is developed. The strategic priorities from this will form part of the Council’s emerging planning framework – the Core Strategy

New Addington at present has 20.000 citizens and is part of the district Croydon, Greater London. After Second World War the `Green Belt´surrounding the Capital was developed to provide new living rooms for thousands. Infrastructure in New Addington followed slowly. Up to the sixties there was only the `Central Parade´ a little shopping area with some green spaces and parking areas. A public swimming pool, health centre and public library were constructed until the nineties. In 2000 the arrival of `Tramlink´ provided connection with Croydon in 20 minutes and was a big step forward. But still New Addington, neighbour of the rich and famous Wimbledon, is meant to be Croydon`s most deprived ward.
