Town extension – Meppel (NL)

Public Community Planning Process with pre-animation phase to generate the vision for the major city extension of Meppel city. Overes Community Planning and John Thompson & Partners have been commissioned by the city authority to speed up the public and political will building process on the biggest ever city extension for the people of Meppel.

During a period of the coming 25 years the city planners plan to settle 5.300 new homes on currently green land for more than 10.000 people plus the necessary economic and social infrastructure. The actual planning event in the main Church in Meppel brought together more than 500 people.

The Community Planning result includes proposals for the improvements of the previously designed masterplan to reduce the amount of landtake, keep more of the original peet-land open for nature and recreation areas, create a higher density with a clear central heart of the new community with integrated streets, squares and public spaces arround which the main economic and social facillities are contentrated. more details here

The city of Meppel in co-operation with the regional housing association Woonconcept have started the realisation process in 2006.
