Workshop in Auroville (India) 2009
Participants of the Sustainable Regions – Co-operative Planning in Auroville, February 28th 2009
Exploring Community Planning Methods for Sustainable Regional Planning in India. Auroville being the venue to host an event for about 50 representatives and experts to start up a facilitated, co-operative regional planning process for a fast and uncontrolled growing 3.000 km2 area around Pondicherry city.
The event was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor Govind Sing Gujar of Puducherry and commenced with presentations and global examples by Andreas von Zadow (Potsdam), Ekhart Hahn (Berlin), Charles Campion and Ross Peedle (JTP London) on the topic of sustainable planning. The subsequent 2 days consisted of collaborative workshops and hands-on-planning sessions with the participation of planners and officials from Puducherry, Chennai, Auroville, Goa, Bangalore, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and stakeholders from the region. The co-operative process inspired a new approach, led by an unjudgmental facillition team, to the Sustainable Regional Planning and Development process, which is badly needed on several levels of this region comprising Puducherry and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu.
It is hoped that this forum will be the first step in the creation of a new nurturing, sustainable regional plan which will lead towards a model region for India.
