Technical and ecological at best: Weleda built an examplary production plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany
After more than one year of careful considerations it came to a decision for the location of a new production plant of the WELEDA AG. The weighting of alternative places was finished and for the manufacturer of medicial and personal hygiene products there was no other option than Wetzgau. Wetzgau is situated close to the sites of cultivation and processings of medical herbs.
By building this ultra-modern production plant at Schwäbisch Gmünd, which is the largest single investition in the history of this long established company, WELEDA made a important decision as well for this area as contra possible other offers from East Germany or East Europe.
The urban government made appropriate preliminary decision but on the other hand, due to the sensible location in Wetzgau, it also made special demands on the design of the production plant. The site with its trails for bicycler and walker should keep its importance for recreation. WELEDA assured
Schwäbisch Gmünd a broad package of ecological compensation measures for the inavoidable effects to the landscape. The project should also become a benefit to the people living and working there.
For further coordinations the town held an open event in June 2008. All interested citizens were invited to this community planning workshop to get informations about the project, to contribute additional ideas for integrating the new WELEDA plant into the site, and to discuss with the participating experts and responsible persons.
