Breathing new life into the Maltings at Berlin-Lichtenrade (D) 2011
Since decades the ´Alte Mälzerei` in Berlin-Lichtenrade is a sleeping beauty – although it has a perfect connection to Berlin and is situated next to shops and an alive residential area. Within the last 10 years different concepts were discussed, developed but could not been carried out.
Having been contacted by the Ecumenical Environment Group, Andreas von Zadow, JTP’s partner in Germany, initiated a project to resolve a planning deadlock for the area around the Mälzerei, a huge, listed Maltings building erected in the 19th century.
In June 2011, the JTP team of Andreas von Zadow led a 2-day workshop in which the landowner, the Ecumenical Environment Group and representatives of REWE supermarket, which has a store on the site, worked together to find a strategy for bringing the whole area back to life. The design proposals are being disussed by the local politicians.
At the open day held on 28 November 2011, hundreds of people came when the local community were invited to visit the extraordinary Mälzerei. The positive response from the public, along with the award of the prize for community engagement, raises hopes that the project may now make further steps towards realising the area’s potential.
John Thompson & Partners’ participatory planning work in Germany has made a major contribution to the award of the prize for community engagement received by the Ecumenical Environment Group, an association of local interest groups including members of Protestant and Catholic churches in Lichtenrade, in the south of Berlin.
