Leverkusen – deconstruction of railwaytracks – “New Railway-City Opladen” (DE) 2000

 

The planning weekend in May 2000 was carried out jointly by the city of Leverkusen and the German Rail to achieve the following goals:

• Establishment of a joint vision for the development area shared by the city officials, the German Rail, neighbours and the public
• Making better use of the potentials in this area, which is excellently located
• Positioning of the area in the wider city context
• Considering the various proposals for future uses like the new access road ‘Bahnallee’, a new motorrailtrain terminal, facilities for youth and culture (IC1), new shops, trade and industry, etc.
• Proposals how to develop the derelict parts of the railway land in such a way that future uses it will integrate in the still function-ing parts, particularly the railway repair shad
• Draft urban design plan for the area as synthesis of the various proposals and requests
• Proposals how to jointly solve all traffic problems: rails, streets, public transport, bicycle and pedestrian links
• Proposals how to improve the green and open spaces
• Develop guide lines and strategies for the way forward
• Prioritisation and generating a list of short, medium and long-term activities
The aim was to develop a long lasting holistic vision for the area which can trigger of various activities carried out by both private and public interests.
